Life Underground

2010 May 11

These characters are familiar to anyone who has been through the 14th Street ACE subway station in Chelsea. The permanent installation is called Life Underground, and consists of over 100 separate pieces by sculptor Tom Otterness. Much like this vignette, they are cute and playful, while at the same time depicting the hedonistic and sometimes criminal side of New York City. They were commissioned by the MTA’s Arts for Transit program. (I love that the subway has an art budget.)

I see these characters every morning and I’m often tempted to shoot them, but I haven’t been able to find a composition I like. I saw these two for the first time today, and I loved their perch on an i-beam right under a light. It’s like they’re performing for the people walking down the stairs below them.
