Street shrines like this one are a much too common site in any city. It seems they almost always mark the untimely and violent passing of a child. As I walked by this one, I stepped closer to see what had happened. 11-year-old Leandra Rosado was killed by a drunk driver. A quick Google search revealed even more details: Leandra’s killer was not a careless stranger, it was a friend’s mother and Leandra was her passenger. And even though the shrine is still clearly being tended and added to, the accident took place in October, 2009. This terrible tragedy resulted in the passage of “Leandra’s Law” just one month later. The law makes it a felony to drive drunk with a child in the car.
Looking over this shrine (much of it is not in the photo – on the ground below there are hundreds of stuffed animals), I can feel how loved Leandra must have been, and how painfully she must be missed.
