Back on Fire Island, the narrow barrier island about two hours from Manhattan. Like all barrier islands, the ecosystem here is complex and delicate. There are no roads or cars, and all construction is raised above the ground on stilts. Including the wooden walkways. Here, even the salt marsh in someone’s front yard is left mostly untouched.
