Image #13: Yes, there actually used to be sheep grazing here. Though included in the park’s design as a military parade ground, 200 sheep were put here instead. They remained until 1934, when they were removed for their protection. The Great Depression was on, and the park commissioner was afraid someone might try to eat them. When they were removed, their sheepfold (that’s a barn for sheep) was turned into a restaurant. Today it’s known as the Tavern on the Green.
