This beautiful Beaux Art style building on 5th Avenue was built in 1913 as a home for the publisher Charles Scribner’s Sons. Until the 1980’s, the ground floor was the Scribner’s Bookstore, where you could browse titles from the publisher’s great authors, like F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Kurt Vonnegut, and Edith Wharton. Eventually, Scribner’s would be acquired by Simon & Schuster. And the grand space that was envisioned as a literary beacon would become a place where Sephora sells cosmetics. I don’t know if you can call that progress.
