A paramedic waits with his ambulance close to the Coney Island boardwalk. After all, there are a lot of ways to hurt yourself, and each other, out there. He’s probably glancing at that tower in the distance with gratitude that it was shut down in 1968. Before that, people were hoisted to the top on cables, then released on parachute. It was built for the 1939 World’s Fair in Queens, then moved to this spot in 1941. I bet it was tons of fun. And a death trap.
