Cairn Practice

2010 September 13

A young girl makes piles of stones, called cairns, on Bluffs Beach on Block Island. The main part of the beach was littered with cairns of various sizes and shapes. It seems that whenever I find a beach or riverbed anywhere in the world with a plentiful supply of smooth rounded stones, people build these little towers. They seem to have an unspecific spiritual or meditative quality for some, though I’m sure many simply build them because it gives them something to do.
