Blueprints to Freedom: An Ode to Bayard Rustin, co-produced by The La Jolla Playhouse and Kansas City Rep, examines the life of civil rights leader through his central role in the 1963 March on Washington. In spite of being openly gay, Rustin was a major force in the American Civil Rights Movement. Projections on a chalkboard in Rustin’s office help to make the deeper aspects of his organizing skills tangible. And later, the March itself is made real through a combination of historical footage, music, and performance.
